Gardena

Gardena comes up with an outstanding resistance to late blight and an unique appearance.

Variety characteristic:

Gardena is a plant of medium height. It is tolerant to a periodic shortage of water and in years with drought it may outweigh other varieties with a satisfactory yield. High yield of medium tubers is formed high in the ridge. Thus, deeper planting is recommended to avoid green tubers. Gardena is known for its unique optical appearance. The tubers are of good homogeneity, extraordinarily smooth with pale pink skin colour and light yellow flesh. A good ability for washing and a nice grading guarantee a good post-packing appearance. The taste will surely satisfy a gourmet of the culinary BC – mealy type. Due to the short period of dormancy of tubers and quite early sprout stimulation, it is recommended to store it in a controlled atmosphere or to sale the tuber seeds in late autumn. Due to the skin’s sensitivity to mechanical damage, care should be taken to minimize its formation during harvesting. The size of the damage has a significant impact on the success of storage. Among the ware potato varietes with an average length of the growing season (early to mid-early), the Gardena variety has the highest genetically determined resistance to Phytophthora infestans obtained by conventional breeding methods. It is, therefore suitable for organic growing.
