Hodowla Ziemniaka Zamarte
For almost 80 years, Hodowla Ziemniaka Zamarte has been a leader in the breeding of table and starch potatoes in Poland and stands out among European seed companies.
Thanks to the careful, persistent breeding and organizational work of several generations of specialists in the Zamarte breeding department, over 100 potato varieties have been bred and introduced into agricultural practice. Most of them have received recognition from potato producers, processors and consumers. The breeding progress achieved makes Hodowla Ziemniaka Zamarte one of the leading national and European companies.
The Potato Breeding Center in Zamarte is currently organized as a limited liability company (Ltd.) called “Hodowla Ziemniaka Zamarte Sp. z o.o. – Grupa IHAR.” This company conducts both selection work and propagation of pre-basic and basic material (from in vitro to micro- and mini-tubers to qualified material of class A). The company is owned by the Institute of Plant Breeding and Acclimatization in Radzików – a state research institute subordinate to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
Since April 1, 2018, the potato breeding station in Zamarte has been managed by Dr. Piotr Kamiński, who headed the breeding department for many years.
The Zamarte Potato Breeding Station not only develops new potato varieties but also operates a dynamic operation with a modern storage facility for grain, rapeseed, and legumes. Equipped with a complete range of machinery for pre- and basic cleaning, as well as seed dressing and packaging machines, the facility enables the production of the highest quality seed.

Our activity
The basis of our company’s activity is potato breeding. Our roots and influence have always been linked to agriculture: breeding began in 1946, and to this day, we passionately cultivate approximately 2,500 hectares on our farms in Zamarte and Stare Olesno.
We are convinced of the effectiveness of our conventional plant breeding methods without the use of genetic engineering. We develop our products using the most modern breeding methods. Highly specialized breeding of new varieties is based on a large pool of our own breeding lines. The accumulated genetic resources and suitable environmental conditions, which favor the selection of varieties with a shortened growing season, are Zamarte’s advantages.
Hodowla Ziemniaka Zamarte Sp. z o. o. – IHAR Group is a professional company. The efficient seed production of our own varieties enables the production of a large quantity of qualified material.
Our most important asset-besides experienced management and employees-is our soil and the quality of our crops. Therefore, we rely on diverse and complex crop rotations and the cultivation of cover crops to increase soil fertility and reduce soil and water erosion.
