Longina

Early maturing French fries potato variety approved by the producers.

Variety characteristic:

Longina is an early maturing French fries variety approved by the producers. Plant of the Longina variety shows a leaf-stem growth habit. It develops a dense canopy that tightly covers the inter-row spaces. Rather scarce inflorescence characterize this variety. Longina is characterized by a large number of stems per plant and a strong root system. It forms approx. 13 tubers per plant. Longina comes up with a high uniformity of tuber fraction. Proportion of fraction 40mm+ is more than 98%. Tuber size is very uniform, shape is very regular, long oval with homogenous, light yellow flesh. Longina is suitable for sprouting and tolerates cutting of the seed potato well. Longina is an easy to reproduce variety thanks to its high multiplication coefficient combined with a high resistance to PVY. Longina reveals no tendency to internal defects and deformations which results in a negligible amount of losses during processing. Outstanding attribute of the Longina variety is a very high elongation coefficient, one of the highest on the market, which allows for cutting longer, more valuable fries. One of many advantages of Longina is a rapid gaining of marketable yields on irrigated plantations, which enables early harvesting of tubers and processing/delivery to the factory as early as July and August. Longina has an approximate dry matter content of 22% and is characterized by a low level of reducing sugars of approx. 0.11% which translates in uniform frying parameters and excellent frying color (2,0 -2,3).

Site requirements:

Longina has medium demands to soil quality and higher demands to water supply. It can be grown on all soil types. Longina has a relatively low nitrogen demand and is quite tolerant to periodic drought periods and high temperatures. Longina responds well to irrigation.
